Saveur 2009 and 2010 top 100 lists

High Heat Spatula

While reading an article on www.saveur.com regarding the 2009 Saveur 100 favorite foods, restaurants, drinks, people, places and things, I found some elements of particular interest. The entire article was interesting and definitely worth the read, consisting of everything from several different kinds of sugar, to favorite cookbooks and kitchen wares. It was full of fun and interesting everyday "favorites" that are often taken for granted.

A few of the items that caught my eye in the 2009 list, that I didn't really consider to be "top 100," are actually items that can be found right here on our website and most likely in your kitchen. Take the Rubbermaid high heat scraper for instance. I actually have one of these at home; it is amazing. Saveur raves about this scraper at number 57 on their list. Which makes sense, especially for those of us that are extremely clumsy in the kitchen. I've melted spatulas on several different occasions; usually because I forget about them and leave them in a pot after I finish stirring something. I know this is my own fault, but Rubbermaid solved the problem for the clumsy and forgetful cook by creating a high heat scraper that can withstand heat up to 500 degrees.

Lodge Logic Cast Iron Skillet

Oh yes, and speaking about kitchen tools that cause my spatula's demise, number 66 on Saveur's list is the Lodge Logic Cast Iron Skillet. This skillet is one of the most versatile tools for a cook. You can use Lodge's cast iron skillets for just about anything: frying, sautéing, searing meats before roasting them or even melting your favorite spatula . Cast iron is one of the most perfect materials for cooking. It's durable, gets extremely hot and maintains a high even temperature which, in turn, has the trickledown effect on the flavor of your food. The best part about the Lodge Logic Cast Iron Skillet is that it comes preseasoned. You don't have to spend time preparing your skillet for use; it's already ready to go.

Following the Lodge cast iron skillet is the Lincoln Foodservice Heavy Duty Sheet Pan, coming in at 67. Lincoln is great when it comes to manufacturing high quality equipment so it's no surprise this sheet pan was mentioned. It will not warp or buckle in a hot oven and you can count on perfectly golden-browned cookies every time provided you don't forget they are in the oven. The sheet pan can't do all the work, you know. (And if you do have a habit of forgetting, please feel free to check out the egg timers section of our website.)

The 2010 Saveur 100 list is also readily available for a good read as well. On this list there is another entire group of interesting people, places, things and recipes worthy of discussion. My favorite on this list is the Immersion Blender. This one little device makes a world of difference in your kitchen. You can stick the immersion blender right into your pan to make smooth gravy, chunky soups, salsa or whatever you can imagine. Consider using it for chopping, whipping or blending; the options are limitless.

You should definitely check out www.saveur.com and especially look over their top 100 lists. The website is full of delicious recipes, convenient kitchen tips, and interesting facts and articles.
