Social Media and Its Effects on the Foodservice Industry
2009 was a year of many things for many people. For restaurants, as well as most individuals, it was a year of learning the ups and downs of social media. Whether the business is a large multi-million dollar industry or a small privately owned business the effects of social media are equally valid.
For a lot of restaurants the desire to establish a solid presence on Myspace, Facebook, or Twitter led to many great moments as well as disappointing times. Moving into the digital age is something that, if you truly want to reach your maximum audience, is inevitable. By the end of 2009 most of the major players, as well as quite a few of the independent companies, had staked their claim to social media space. For some, they are still trying to adjust to this new online presence and the upkeep involved. Many had not considered that the internet could be relentless and unforgiving. Not all reviews that a business receives, on any social media site, will necessarily be constructive, nice, or even truthful. A prime example of this negative attention was the YouTube prank posed by some disgruntled Domino's Pizza employees. This video quickly went viral and completely trashed Domino's reputation in the process.
McDonalds, one of the largest fast food chains, is not immune to the need, or desire, to keep up with the changing times. They've promised to do a complete overhaul of their restaurants, making them much more friendly and welcoming to the digital age. McDonalds has been around for 51 years and has gone 30 years without any major changes in appearance. A significant, and unwelcome by many of their franchisees, re-design of their stores is about to be set forth. Franchisees are concerned about the high cost of this upcoming makeover but company officials believe it is more than needed.
As the times change, so must the business, as there are serious repercussions to remaining stagnant. Social media can be a blessing or a curse; it's all about how you go about it. Whether you choose to be extremely cautious and slowly delve into the realm of online networking or you hire a professional to establish your web presence, the results can be astounding.
