1. Knowing Your Machine's Primary Application

The first step in KaTom's Scotsman Ice Configurator prompts you to select the type of application the ice machine will be used in. Scotsman units fit a wide range of operations, but the 9 types of applications chosen for this configurator are restaurants, healthcare facilities, offices or breakrooms, lodging and hotels, cocktail lounges, cafeterias and self-service areas, convenience stores, salad bars and seafood displays, and coffee shop or smoothie cafes. If your exact application is not represented in the configurator, you should choose the most similar option. This tool also provides an option for choosing a secondary application, letting you select another of the provided applications for the builder's calculations.

2. Calculating the Amount of People Served Each Day

Next, you will be asked to provide the peak number of patients, employees, or customers served at your application each day. The configurator has determined the average amount of ice used per person in each application per day and will use that information when calculating the search. For instance, if your restaurant serves 200 people per day, and the average amount of ice per seat is 2.5 pounds, the configurator will seek out units capable of producing 500 pounds of ice per day. Listed below are the configurator’s weight averages for each application.

ApplicationWeight Average
Restaurant
6.2 Pounds Per Seat
Healthcare
8 Pounds Per Bed
Lodging/Hotel
3 Pounds Per Room
Cocktail Lounge
3 Pounds Per Seat
Cafeteria/Self Service
1 Pound Per Customer
Convenience Store
1.6 Pounds Per Customer
Salad Bar/Seafood Display
35 Pounds Per Cubic Feet of Display

3. Deciding Which Type of Ice Your Operation Requires

Once an application has been selected, consider the type of ice your operation will require, as each ice type is made in different shapes, sizes, and consistencies. Whether your ice is used when serving fountain drinks at a convenience store, filling ice buckets at hotels, or treating patient injuries at hospitals, the type of ice your Scotsman produces can be crucial to your application.

  • Cube: Perfect for mixed drinks and carbonated beverages, this ice type is available in full and half cube sizes and is great for a variety of commercial operations, including hotels, restaurants, and convenience stores.
  • Nugget: The Original Chewable Ice® is commonly used for fountain beverages and smoothies, as well as in salad bars and in medical facilities.
  • Flake: A soft, versatile, and slow-melting ice form, flake ice is often used in hospitals and medical facilities to reduce swelling, as well as in retail settings.
  • Ice and Water Dispenser: Available in countertop models, these units are designed for full- and self-service in restaurants, offices, hotels, and hospitals.

4. Determining the Maximum Width Your Business Can Accommodate

In addition to the placement of the unit, the Scotsman Ice Configurator will prompt you to list the maximum available width for the machine, with options ranging from 18 inches to 60 inches. This field ensures the model selected will be compatible with the amount of counter, undercounter, or bin space your application has available.

5. Choosing the Location of the Machine

KaTom's configurator requires you to select the placement of the ice machine within the operation. Scotsman machines can be installed several areas, and some units are designed for countertops, undercounter spaces, installation on bins, installation on dispensers with and without a cold plate, or other specific locations.

6. Estimating the Machine's Ice Usage

The configurator will present an ice production estimate based on the selections you made in the previous categories. These estimates are only suggestions and can be manually edited to better reflect your anticipated requirements. For example, you may want to add another 10 or 20 percent to the to allow for growth and unexpected usage.

7. Selecting Your Scotsman Ice Machine
