How to Remove Sticker Residue From Metal

Removing sticker residue from labels on stainless steel kitchenware can be a vexing task if you don't approach it properly. Soaking your stainless steel item in soap and water with the label attached will leave behind lingering sticky glue, and using abrasive cleaners or chemicals to remove it can damage the metal's corrosion-resistant chromium-oxide layer.
This quick guide will show you how to remove sticker residue from metal using a solution made from coconut oil and baking soda, which are safe for use on stainless steel. Follow these steps to quickly and completely remove pesky labels from your pots, pans, measuring cups, and utensils.
Removal Steps
- Remove as much of the label as possible using your fingers.
- Mix equal parts coconut oil and baking soda and plaster the affected area with the oil and baking soda solution.
- Rub the solution in with a cloth, paper towel, or nylon brush, scrubbing with the grain until the sticker residue is removed completely.
- Clean the product with soap and water.

Always attempt to peel off the label first before washing or wetting it. In many cases, a dry label will leave behind only a small amount of glue residue that you can easily remove with soapy water. If residue persists, or you've already washed the item with the label on, use this guide to remove sticker glue that's left behind.
Other Methods of Sticker Removal
Viable
- Duct tape: We tried sticking duct tape to the sticker residue area to see if it would bind to the tape's adhesive. While this still left behind a small amount of residue, it was easily removed with soap and water.
Not Viable
- Rubbing alcohol: We soaked a paper towel in rubbing alcohol before applying it to the residue. It initially loosened the substance, but the residue became more troublesome and spread around the surface when we tried to wipe it clean.
- Nail polish remover: The acetone in nail polish remover worked similarly to rubbing alcohol when applied with a paper towel. It loosened the residue, but didn't lift it from the stainless steel surface.
