Scotsman CU50PAX-1 Description
The Scotsman CU50PAX-1 undercounter ice maker produces gourmet ice that melts slowly and is perfect for unique cocktails. Ice forms into top-hat shapes measuring 1 1⁄8 inches long, 1 inch wide, and 1 1⁄4 inches tall. Depending on the ambient air and water temperatures, it produces 65 pounds of ice in a 24-hour period, and its bin stores as much as 26 pounds. Since it enables the ice maker to have inactive periods, the bin helps keep up with demand during peak hours and reduces stress on the system.
Since it is 15 inches wide, the Scotsman CU50PAX-1 undercounter ice machine fits in compact spaces. Its control panel alerts users when cleanings are needed, helping keep ice fresh. Extending the time between cleanings, a water quality sensor detects hard water conditions and helps remove heavy minerals with each harvest cycle. For cleanup, drain water is removed by a 10-inch drain tube through the built-in pump.

delighted
I replaced my failed Manitowoc SM50-A (after only three years of use) with the Scotsman CU50PAX-1 and I couldn't be happier. The Scotsman is superior in almost every way. Having had the panels off of both, I found the build quality of the Scotsman to be better. It has superior fit and finish, easier access to components, and better location and design of the water inlet valve and drain pump outlet. The Manitowoc had a "delay" feature that would pause ice making for a period of time that the Scotsman lacks. I liked that feature because mine is used in a residential environment and there were times I didn't want to hear it. However, the Scotsman is significantly quieter than the Manitowoc and doesn't really need a "delay" feature. Both the sprayer pump and the compressor are much quieter on the Scotsman. Outside of the harvest cycle, It has a noise signature more like a refrigerator, not an ice maker. The ice bins of both are about the same size, but the production capacity of the Scotsman is about double that of the Manitowoc. Another nice feature on the Scotsman is that it overfills the sump during harvest to purge some of the sump water, which is prone to accumulating minerals as a byproduct of the way the ice is formed. The sump on the Scotsman has a drain plug making it easy to empty, the Manitowoc does not and removing the drain hose from the sump is very difficult. If I could change the Scotsman, I would add an ice bin light, and mount the ice scoop on the door rather than the side of the ice bin.
We're glad the Scotsman has been a strong upgrade for you, especially in build quality, accessibility, and overall noise level. That quieter operation in a residential setting makes a big difference. We also appreciate the notes about the bin light and scoop placement-feedback like that is valuable. It's great to hear you're happy with the switch, and we truly appreciate you sharing such an in-depth review.
I would buy this again.
This was a replacement for the same/similar model that was almost 12 years old. The old one had been repaired about 6 years ago, which wasn't cheap. The merchant that sold and services the Scotsman is no longer in business, so repair this time was not an option. This is one of the few that makes the 'gourmet' ice, which we prefer.
so happy with Scotsman
Love it and wish we'd have bought this years ago!
No shut off
This machine is part of our new kitchen design . I've had ice machines in my house before. I'm sure the designer picked this one because it has a flat front. But it is so annoying. Every time I open the door 30 or 40 ice cubes fall out as it has no automatic shut off. Other machines that I have had Which are much less expensive had shut off's. Engineering needs to look at this problem.at this price should have should have all the bells and whistle's.
So far so good
I've had this machine for about a month now and it's working great, but it's brand new, so it's suppose to. No problems as of yet and it was really easy to hook up. It is loud compared to the previous model machine I had. In fact, you can hear the ice cubes falling into the bin from the other end of the house. Not a problem for me though b/c after a while you get use to it. I did add a filter to my water line as our city tends to have bad water. The real test is going to be at cleaning time b/c I was looking for a machine that was easy to clean and was assured this model was. We'll see!!! As of now, I'm really pleased and would buy again. Also, the best part, hats off to KaTom for having the best price of everyone. $600 cheaper than what my local dealer could get one.
