True Spec Series Refrigeration

What is the True Spec Series?

Known for reliable refrigeration equipment, True Refrigeration offers a line of premium refrigerators and freezers for commercial use known as the Spec Series®. Many high-end establishments or those looking for attractive, efficient equipment may see True Spec Series as a desirable option. These units boast reliability and durability and are constructed of quality stainless steel and aluminum. Each model is insulated with Ecomate® high-density polyurethane, which has both an ozone depletion and global warming potential value of zero.

The Spec Series includes highly versatile food storage units that fit a variety of needs an operation might have, with refrigerators, freezers, dual-temp units, and heated cabinets all available. Electronic controls allow you to run your equipment exactly the way you want it and accurately monitor it to make sure it's meeting those expectations. Models are available with reach-in, pass-thru, roll-in, or roll-thru configurations to support the needs of your operation and preferences of your staff.

There are three product lines that fall under the Spec Series: STR, STA, and STG. Learning more about these lines and what sets them apart can help you decide which of these models is right for your foodservice operation.

True Spec Series: Specifications & Features

Each line under the Spec Series includes its own unique, distinguishing features. Learning the details of the STR, STA, and STG product lines can help you choose the model that best fits your operation.

True Spec Series STR

The STR Series

  • These models are constructed using stainless steel for both the interior and exterior sides, including the floor and ceiling.

  • It features a stainless steel door lining.

  • STR models come with one interior shelving kit option factory installed in each full section.

True Spec Series STA

The STA Series

  • The STA Series features units with a stainless steel exterior.

  • The interior is constructed of a stainless steel floor and ceiling with aluminum interior side walls and an aluminum back panel.

  • STA Series models come standard with three heavy-duty chrome-plated wire shelves per full-size section.

True Spec Series STG

The STG Series

  • Feature a stainless steel door and exterior front panel with aluminum sides.

  • The interior consists of aluminum side walls and an aluminum back with a stainless steel floor and ceiling.

  • STG models feature three heavy-duty, gray PVC-coated wire shelves per full-size section.

The Spec Series Refrigeration System

While each Spec Series line has some unique features, all models under this umbrella feature a state-of-the-art refrigeration system. True manufactures each unit with a self-contained capillary tube system, with many Spec Series models utilizing R290 hydrocarbon refrigerant (a highly refined propane). Hydrocarbons are clean, efficient substances that help ensure these models perform at their peak with lower energy costs and impact on the environment.

Operator Tip

By utilizing R290 hydrocarbon refrigerant, True products work safely and efficiently and often decrease long-term costs on the operator's end.

One of the most prominent benefits of the Spec Series refrigeration system is the condenser, which is mounted on the top of each unit to avoid taking up valuable storage space in each unit. Because of this, you'll be able to store more in each Spec Series unit, reducing the need to purchase additional equipment. This location also enhances efficiency as top mounted condensers avoid pulling in the same amount of dust and debris that can hinder bottom-mounted condensers.

Other Special Features

True offers a selection of optional features for many models in the Spec Series, and one of the most useful is the ability for you to customize the shelving inside the unit upon purchase. There are four different shelving kit options available for Spec Series refrigerators and freezers.

  • Type 1: 16-gauge stainless steel that can support one 18-inch by 26-inch tray or two 14-inch by 18-inch pans.

  • Type 2: Chrome-plated steel rods rim support one 18-inch by 26-inch pan; accommodates only one half section and intended for light-duty application only.

  • Type 3: 16-gauge stainless steel, angle-type brackets support one 18-inch by 26-inch pan, two 14-inch by 18-inch pans, or two 12-inch by 20-inch pans.

  • Type 4: Chrome shelves that come standard in STR and STA refrigerators and freezers; also available in stainless steel. In STG models, these come standard with PVC coating.

In addition to the array of shelving choices, certain models include additional features. Each model features LED interior lighting. Some Spec Series models are fitted with glass doors that feature energy-efficient insulated glass to merchandise contents to customers or ease product identification while still keeping contents at appropriate temperatures. Select glass door models sport a vertical LED display for attractive arrangement of refrigerated wine or beer. These units come standard with three shelves per section with the option of specialized wine shelves.

To monitor the interior conditions of your unit, a digital display presents the temperature conditions in Fahrenheit or Celsius. When operated properly, each model is NSF/ANSI Standard 7 compliant for the storage of cold food products.

Spec Series models include self-closing doors to prevent busy employees from accidentally leaving them ajar and spoiling the food inside. When opened to 120 degrees, the doors will stay open for more convenient loading and unloading. Each model comes with lifetime guaranteed heavy-duty door handles and bolt-style door locks. For smooth mobility during cleaning or maintenance, each unit includes 5-inch braking castors.

True Spec Series Nomenclature

With so many features and specifications available, it's important to understand how to read Spec Series product numbers so you can get a quick idea of what each model includes. True outlines the structure of its product numbers with descriptions of what each position represents.

Spec Series Product Number Components

  • Metal finish: The first position reads STR, STA, or STG, indicating the series, which will in turn tell you the interior and exterior metal construction.

  • Number of sections: Look to the second position to determine if the model feature a one- or two-section.

  • Type of cabinet: The third position includes four options. R indicates a refrigerated cabinet, F indicates a freezer cabinet, DT indicates a dual-temp cabinet, and H indicates a heated cabinet.

  • Front of cabinet door configuration: The fourth position will read either PT for pass-thru or RI/RT for roll-in/roll-thru. A standard reach-in unit omits this position.

  • Front of cabinet door configuration: The fifth position indicates number of doors, door configuration and door construction. So a 2HS would be a two-door, half-height, stainless steel door, while a 1G would indicate one full-height door made of glass.

  • Back of cabinet door configuration: Similar to the fifth position, the sixth position indicates whether the unit has a full- or half-height stainless steel back door or a full- or half-height glass back door.

So, for example, a Spec Series unit with the product number STR2RPT-2S-2S is from the STR series, meaning it has stainless steel interior and exterior walls. It features a two section, refrigerated, pass-thru configuration, two full-height stainless steel doors on the front, and two full-height stainless steel doors on the back.
