Gold Medal 1487 Description

To create a block of ice with this Gold Medal block ice mold, assemble the two metal pieces that form the block mold, then line the mold with one of the included bags and fill it with water. Cover the mold with the included lid to protect it from dust and debris and stick it in a freezer. Shave ice blocks form best when they're frozen slowly to moderate temperatures of 5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Allow the block to freeze for at least eight hours to avoid cracking and the formation of air pockets. The two-piece mold is easily disassembled to remove the ice with no struggle.

The Gold Medal 1487 mold makes a block of ice that measures 12 inches long and 5 inches high to be used with Gold Medal's 1087 and 1087DC block ice shavers to create authentic shave ice. The block will weigh approximately 7 1⁄2 pounds. Replacement bags are available as KaTom item number 231-1488.

Don't buy this!!!

The photo depicts a rectangular box with a block of ice in it. It is actually three pieces of galvanized sheetmetal bent into 3 pieces that don't hold water. The two-piece base holds a plastic bag and the lid keeps two sides together while not addressing the other two sides. It doesn't hold water - don't buy it thinking you can fill it with water, put it in the freezer and get a nice block of ice. No, you need to put a plastic bag in the flimsy mold, best you can get it filled and get the mold to the freezer, again, best you can. I'll try buying a heavy rectangular plastic box and fill it an inch or two at at time, freezing between fills. I read that using that method the plastic box will not be broken by the expanding ice.
