"I repaired 6 tongs with these stainless steel springs. The original springs were not stainless steel and they rusted out and broke eventually. These new springs fit in all of my tongs, which all have about the same dimensions in the pivot area. I just drilled out the pivot rivet (5 were aluminum and 1 was stainless steel) and replaced them with stainless steel 2 mm diameter (M2) metric machine screws 20 mm long. The distance between the two halves of the tongs was about 17 mm side to side. That left 3 mm of screw length to accomodate a flat washer under the screw head, a flat washer and lock washer under the hex nut at the other end of the pivot screw. Tighten the M2 hardware (don't worry if the tongs feel too tight to move freely now since they will move smoothly after the spring is installed). Then I put the new spring in as follows: put the spring into a bench vise with the two ends facing up about 1/2" above the top of the vice grips. Close the vise until the two spring ends are far enough apart to fit over both tongs ends. Slide the tongs over the spring ends and slowly open the vise while pushing up on the spring from below. The spring will easily slide all the way in and stay in place inside the tongs. Job done! The tongs have just the right amount of tension when compressed and they release smoothly when you release pressure on the grip. They should last forever with all stainless steel hardware that won't rust."
