Spiegelau Beer Glasses: What You Need to Know

Spiegelau offers various types of beer glasses, including glasses designed for use with craft beers. Each glass is constructed of crystal glass, which is commonly used in the production of premium tableware and stemware. The Spiegelau glassmaking process starts out by combining sand, lime, sodium or potassium oxides, and a specific amount of cullet – recycled broken glass that's added to a new batch of glass. The ingredients are melted at around 2,700 degrees Fahrenheit; as the powdered ingredients turn to liquid, the liquid glass runs through platinum-lined tubes to remove any imperfections, impurities, and inconsistencies.

Common Questions About Spiegelau Beer Glasses

Why do you need Spiegelau beer glasses?

The "Platinum Glass" process explained above provides strength and durability to the glass. This makes Spiegelau beer glasses and Spiegelau craft beer glasses ideal for use in commercial settings, where they're less likely to break than other glasses. The use of potassium in the glassmaking process provides the glass with brilliant clarity by enhancing transparency and light refraction. Spiegelau glasses were also tested for safe use in a dishwasher by undergoing 1,500 dishwasher cycles, which showed the glasses had no scratches, loss of brilliance, fogginess, or chemical buildup. Spiegelau's "Beer Classics" collection is blown especially thin with a rim that enhances mouth feel and taste. Approved by an expert panel of industry professionals and master brewers, Spiegelau craft beer glasses are shaped to deliver complex aromas and demonstrate the best beer flavor, texture, and balance.

What different styles of Spiegelau beer glasses are available?

Spiegelau produces nine different styles of beer glasses. The "Beer Classics" line is comprised of four types of glasses: stemmed pilsner, tall pilsner, lager, and wheat beer. Pilsner and wheat beer glasses have a similar shape, which is tall and slender with little curvature. However, the wheat beer glass has more curvature towards the top than the pilsner glass. The design of these glasses helps retain foam from beers while bringing out their aroma and flavor profile. Stemmed pilsner glasses are pilsner glasses that are equipped with a stem, giving them a unique tulip shape.

Spiegelau's craft beer glass lineup includes the Spiegelau IPA glass, stout glass, American wheat beer/witbier glass, barrel-aged beer glass, and craft pils glass. The Spiegelau IPA glass, which was introduced in 2013, is designed to highlight the aromas of IPA beers, as well as preserving the frothy head and enhancing taste and mouth feel. Introduced in 2014, the Spiegelau stout glass is designed to help accentuate the rich coffee, roasted malt, and chocolate flavors found in stout beers. Designed to serve wheat beer, one of the most popular varieties of beer, the Spiegelau American wheat beer – or witbier – glass was introduced in 2015. It's shaped to enhance the beer's fruit- and floral-scented aromas. The Spiegelau barrel-aged beer glass was introduced in 2016, and its stem and tulip shape are designed to enhance the taste of barrel-aged beers. Introduced in 2017, the Spiegelau craft pils glass was customized to release the aromas of hops, providing balance between bitter and residual sweetness.

How do you care for your Spiegelau glasses?

To ensure your glasses continue to withstand long-term use, you must take some precautionary steps when cleaning and storing them. When cleaning up glasses, don't stack them on top of each other. When you store them, don't put the glasses on a hard surface; instead, place them on a mat to cushion them. Also, don't store the glasses rim down as this could cause breakage. Glass racks are also available for storing glasses. Spiegelau glasses can be safely cleaned in a dishwasher; however, handwashing is preferred.
