While butcher paper and wax paper are similar, there are a few differences that gear each toward its intended purpose. A butcher paper roll is typically breathable to preserve the texture of cooked meat and help regulate temperature. Though most options are unwaxed, waxed butcher paper is available for wrapping meats with notable moisture levels, as the wax coating helps prevent sticking. At supermarkets and delis, butcher paper can also be used to wrap portions of meat for customers to purchase.

Wax paper features a nonstick wax coating that's ideal for rolling or kneading dough without sticking. Individual wax paper sheets, sometimes referred to as deli paper, are often used for lining food baskets or wrapping sub sandwiches.
