Common Questions About Krowne Sinks

Why do I need a dedicated hand sink?

Krowne hand sinks are popular because health code regulations usually require employees to have access to a hand sink that's used for washing hands and no other purpose. Failure to install the expected number of hand sinks can lead to violations and leave you in hot water with your local health department, so it's important to find the right sink design to install in your space.

The most popular widths for Krowne hand sinks are 12 and 16 inches, though you'll also find models measuring 1412 and 9 inches wide. These are available in several designs: standard configurations, those with side splashes, sinks with electronic faucets, pedal-operated versions, and ADA-compliant options.

  • Standard. Standard hand sinks have no side splashes and include a manually operated faucet.
  • With side splashes. Hand sinks with side splashes may have them on both sides or just one side of the sink bowl to contain any water that may splash out when it's in use.
  • With electronic faucets. Sinks with this faucet style are automatically operated by a sensor, creating a sanitary, hands-free handwashing station.
  • Pedal operated. Pedestal hand sinks are operated by a pedal at the bottom of the unit instead of by traditional faucet handles, which can be a sanitary option in operations dealing with raw ingredients, caustic residue, or other substances that could cause cross contamination.
  • ADA compliant. Equipped with either wrist blade faucets or electronic faucets, these sinks can be used by those with limited mobility.

What is an underbar sink?

When installed behind the bar alongside other beverage equipment and supplies, an underbar sink can help expedite the drink-making process. Krowne 3-compartment sinks designed for back bar use fall into this category and often have drainboards on one or both sides. This configuration enables them to be used to wash, clean, and sanitize glasses and other barware, which can then be set aside to air dry. Krowne bar sinks are available in various sizes, styles, and configurations to provide operators with increased flexibility in designing their workflow. Below, you'll find more details about some of your options.

  • Compartment sinks. Krowne 3-compartment sinks are the most popular design, but models with one, two, and four sinks are also available.
  • Drainboards. Located on one or both sides of a unit, drainboards on Krowne sinks are reinforced every 6 inches with welded braces. They're measured in 6-inch increments as well, and are most often 12 or 18 inches wide.
  • Speed rails. This storage rail mounted to the front of the unit holds several bottles. Bars with complex drinks on the menu or top-selling customer favorites will benefit from Krowne bar sinks equipped with speed rails as they keep the most-needed bottles at bartenders' fingertips.
  • Glass rinsers and dipper wells. These are often offered alongside a dump sink to ease the process of making complex drinks. Glass rinsers are operated by placing the glass over them with the rim down, and dipper wells, which include a small faucet, are used to clean stirring spoons, measuring spoons, and other tools.
