Common Questions About Coldtainer
What does Coldtainer make?
Coldtainer USA produces and sells insulated food carriers for transporting food pans full of cooked food that are served directly or rethermalized later. In order to keep your food safe for consumption, it must be kept out of the temperature danger zone – temperatures from 40 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit are unsafe for food holding. Food items must be thrown away if it spends too much time at unsafe temperatures, so if your food is cooked at a kitchen away from the serving venue, maintaining temperatures below 40 degrees or above 140 degrees can be tricky. Coldtainer's containers provide heated or refrigerated boxes with insulation to keep your food at safe temperatures for more than eight hours of transport time.
How are Coldtainer products measured?
When investing in mobile refrigerators like these, you want to ensure you get the right unit for your needs. The product specification page will list the external dimensions of each individual food carrier, but pan capacity is the most important measurement for catering companies and institutional kitchens. If you'll be transporting boxes of cold goods instead of pans, look at the internal cubic feet of a container to see how much space you're getting.
These insulated carriers range from three- to twenty-six-pan capacities. Most high-capacity options are heated food carriers, meant to keep food safe and at a palatable temperature during transportation from a kitchen to different serving area. Consider the amount of food you plan to serve and the number of trips you would have to make to have all the food arrive safely with a single container. If you have food that must be kept cold and food that has to be kept hot, you'll need to invest in more than one unit to get the job done. Once you've determined the necessary pan capacity, check the external measurements to ensure the container will fit in whatever transport you'll be using.
Can I just toss my food in the unit and go?
Each Coldtainer USA food carrier will need a set amount of time to reach an appropriate temperature for food storage. While the exact time needed will be listed on the product specification page, you should budget at least an hour for the machine to reach its desired temperature. Most Coldtainer models have an integrated electronic thermostat that will tell you the interior temperature, confirming the appropriate temperature has been reached before you move the unit.
Consider also that adding food to the unit will change its internal temperature. If you pull a pan's worth of food off the stove and shove it in the refrigerated unit, you bring a lot of heat with that food. The temperature in the storage unit will spike, and that time should be counted against the total time food can spend in the danger zone before being served. You may need to leave the machine plugged in for it to cool back down to the right temperature.
What sort of outlet do I need?
Most of our Coldtainer products can use a standard 120V outlet or a 240V outlet, so you shouldn't have trouble finding an appropriate fixture. Check the individual product specification page before purchase to see if having a more powerful outlet might help reach the desired temperature for the unit you're considering.
