What's the difference between ceramic, china, and porcelain?
Differentiating between these three stoneware types can be tricky because the materials are similar and the terms aren't well defined. China and porcelain are actually the same material, unless you're referring to bone china (sometimes called fine china), which must have a percentage of animal bone in the mixture. Ceramic is a catch-all term for stoneware, including porcelain and china, but porcelain is a fully vitrified version of ceramic, meaning it won't absorb any liquids and odors. Porcelain – or china – is generally considered the highest tier of stoneware and one of the top-quality materials for dinnerware altogether.
