There are two styles of dunnage rack to choose from: mobile and stationary. Mobile dunnage racks are most useful in facilities frequently moving items from one location to another or needing temporary storage options, such as in receiving areas. Stationary dunnage racks, which can be used to configure permanent organization solutions in walk-ins and dry storage areas, are the most common option. Whether mobile or stationary, dunnage racks usually have slats or grids to encourage airflow around items in storage.

The strongest dunnage racks can hold up to 5,000 pounds, but models with lower capacities can still hold several hundred pounds. However, dunnage racks with wheels generally have lower capacities than stationary units, so it's important not to overload them. In some cases, you may require a dunnage shelf, which is usually compatible with its manufacturer's shelving units for addition to a vertical system.

In addition to deciding which style your operation needs, you'll need to determine which dimensions are required. Dunnage racks have a standard height of 12 inches, and although there may be shorter options among specific styles or brands, they will still keep items at least 6 inches off the ground to comply with health department and food code regulations. Whether you choose an aluminum dunnage rack or one constructed of heavy-duty plastic, your options range in length from 12 inches to 6 feet and in depth from 10 inches to 3 feet.
