Common Questions About Cambro Containers
What materials are available?
Cambro food storage containers are available in three different materials. All three materials are stain, acid, and odor resistant.
- Polycarbonate: Cambro's Camwear containers are transparent and made of polycarbonate plastic. With a temperature rating of -40 to 210 degrees Fahrenheit, they have the highest heat resistance of Cambro's containers, making them ideal for sous vide cooking. They contain BPA and are NSF listed. Cambro's durable Camwear containers are nearly unbreakable if used correctly.
- Polyethylene: Cambro's polyethylene, or poly, containers are natural white in color and only somewhat translucent. These BPA-free, NSF-listed containers are rated for temperatures between -40 and 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Polypropylene: Cambro's polypropylene, or translucent, containers have a higher degree of visibility than its polyethylene containers, making them ideal for quickly identifying stored product. Like polyethylene, polypropylene is BPA free, NSF listed, and rated for temperatures between -40 and 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
Can I microwave my Cambro storage containers?
Although certain containers are heat resistant to 210 degrees Fahrenheit, Cambro doesn't recommend microwave use with any of its Camwear, poly, or translucent storage containers.
Should I choose square or round Cambro containers?
Cambro's CamSquare containers are available in sizes ranging from 2 to 22 quarts, while round containers are available in sizes from 1 to 22 quarts. Chefs may prefer one shape over another based on past use. In general, round containers are better for stirring, but square containers allow for storage of as much as 33 percent more product than round ones in an equivalent shelf space.
How can I label my storage containers?
Cambro StoreSafe food rotation labels help users maintain a first-in, first-out system by clearly labeling their Cambro storage containers based on food preparation and expiration date. These labels are biodegradable and dissolve in water within 30 seconds.
How can I prevent cross contamination of allergenic foods?
Cambro offers containers with "Allergen-free" labels and purple graduations and lids, enabling easily identifiable dedicated storage for guests with allergies.
Can I use my Cambro for sous vide?
Sous vide cooking is a process in which food is sealed in a vacuum bag and cooked in a low-temperature water bath for an extended time. Commercial chefs may choose to use Cambro containers to hold the water bath needed for this process. Ensure your container's maximum recommended heat resistance is not exceeded when adding water. Polycarbonate, or Camwear, can resist temperatures as hot as 210 degrees Fahrenheit, while polyethylene and polypropylene containers shouldn't be exposed to heat above 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
