Whole Wheat Waffles with Banana Caramel Sauce Recipe

  • 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 2 tbsp. sugar
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 cups low-fat buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs


Whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside. In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk, butter, and eggs. Add in the flour mixture, and mix just until batter is combined.

Ladle about 1/3 cup batter onto each section of the waffle grid; spread batter almost to the edges. Close lid, and bake for three to five minutes, until no steam emerges from the waffle maker.

Ingredients for Banana Caramel Sauce

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp. water
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp. butter
  • 2 thinly sliced bananas


In a large skillet, heat sugar with water, stirring to dissolve sugar. Boil (without stirring) until golden brown, five to eight minutes. Immediately add heavy cream and butter (mixture may sputter and clump); stir until smooth. Add thinly sliced bananas; stir to coat.
