Energy Efficient Refrigeration Buyer's Guide

Energy Efficient Commercial Refrigeration: Additional Information

The energy efficient, or "green", commercial refrigeration section provides all of the refrigeration items that your commercial kitchen will need in order to store food properly at safe temperatures. Refrigeration is absolutely essential to every commercial kitchen, however, the amount of energy these appliances use depends on the type of refrigeration equipment you purchase. Energy efficient refrigerators and freezers are an excellent way to provide quality foods to your customers while keeping your utility costs low. In fact, "green" commercial appliances will often pay for themselves within a few short years.

Types of Energy Efficient Refrigeration

There are two main type of commercial refrigeration to choose from, those with top mount compressors and those with bottom mount compressors.

Top Mount Units

Top mounted units are undisputedly the best when it comes to energy savings. Hot air discharges from the top of the unit and is directed towards the ceiling, which allows the air in your kitchen to remain cool. However, a top mount unit does not allow for any additional storage on the top of the unit because of the uncovered top.

Bottom Mount Units

Energy efficient bottom mounted refrigeration units offer both energy savings and functionality. In bottom mount units, the bottom shelf is considerably higher than in top mount units, greatly reducing how far employees must bend down to place food in or remove food from the refrigeration unit. Bottom mount units also allow for additional storage on top of the unit, which is ideal for the space conscious kitchen. Energy efficiency is slightly reduced because of the warm air flow crossing over the refrigeration unit, yet still offer monumental savings over a conventional refrigeration unit.

Energy Savings!

In comparison to conventional refrigeration models, ENERGY STAR® qualified commercial refrigerators and freezers can produce up to 35% savings! These savings are not only great for the environment, but can also provide additional savings for your budget. Energy efficient appliances typically offer improved insulation, quality fan motors, and high-efficiency compressors.

The following chart shows utility costs for standard models as well as costs for their energy-efficient counterparts.
