Government Announces New Food Safety Website

The Obama administration has recently launched a new website dedicated to providing quality, up-to-date food safety information for consumers. The new site, http://www.foodsafety.gov, was announced on Wednesday by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius during the Consumer Federation of America’s food policy conference. This useful site puts together food-related information from all federal agencies in on place, creating a consumer friendly site that makes sure you are aware of any recall and / or contamination alerts and provides tips on the proper ways to handle food.

This website is the second food safety effort announced in two days by the Obama administration. On Tuesday, the FDA announced a set of more stringent rules for reporting potential contaminations and the creation of an electronic database that will allow manufacturers to quickly and effectively report any food safety issues they may encounter. The new guidelines require producers to report any potential contamination hazards within a 24 hour period.

The goal of this site is to “…keep people safe from unhealthy food and food handling practices and up-to-date on critical food recalls,” according to Sebelius.
