Pretty mouthwatering, huh?
Last weekend my house mates and I decided to make the best of the great summer weather and have company over for dinner. When brainstorming about what to cook I remembered something so quintessentially “summer” that I wouldn’t dare neglect it: THE GRILL. I’m not going to lie and tell you I can set up the grill without help from my patient fiancé but I can say that grilled food is worth the long start up. With that in mind I whipped together a great Hawaiian chicken recipe that is not only easy-peasy but flavorful! Grilled corn and roasted red baby potatoes go great with this dish and it pairs up just as harmoniously with a rice pilaf. By the end of the night all of the chicken was gone and everyone was pleasingly full to the brim. That is what I call success!

Lately, I haven’t had much time to do any baking, which is a little depressing for me, because that’s one of my favorite things to do. But I also realized, that I never posted pictures of the cakes I did before I got into my “no-baking” slump. So I am now posting them for you.
I’m going to start setting aside time in my day just to bake. I find it kind of bad that I have to make a schedule for it, but at least I know I’ll get around to doing it. I also think I might stray from just baking cakes and decorating them. I would like to try my hand at lobster tail pastries (not actual lobster tails), eclairs, danishes….etc. I would like to be a pro one day, so I have to broaden my horizon, right? I can’t just keep making cakes. But believe me, I’ll still be making cakes because that’s the best part.

Mmmm, Cookies!
Although I’ve been obsessed with cooking since I was a young girl, I didn’t actually pick up baking until just a few years ago. If you bake you’ll quickly agree that it is both a precise science and an art…one which intimidated me. My first “creations” were honestly horrible; desert dry biscuits, salty pastries, and tarts that could break your teeth off. It wasn’t until I found this recipe that I felt comfortable firing up the ovens.
Because these cookies are so rich and buttery I decided to add my own little twist to the recipe: dried cranberries, the raisin’s underused cousin. I find that the little bit of additional tartness really goes a long way and I’ve been baking them that way ever since!
If you’ve got a sweet tooth anything like mine you’ll definitely enjoy these simple, delicious cookies.

Yesterday, August 15, 2010, would have been Julia Child’s 98th birthday. Even though she is not here to celebrate the birthday, we can honor this amazing woman through one of her most famous dishes: Boeuf à la Bourguignonne. This was also a prominent dish in the movie Julie & Julia, which depicted the life of Julia, and her devoted fan Julie Powell, who cooked her way through Julia’s cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Even though I am more of a baker, and I’m not such a good cook, I am still a huge fan of Julia Child. Her spunky personality, and different approach towards the art of cooking really entertains and inspires me. For all of you out there who are just as enamored with this lovely woman, here is the Boeuf à la Bourguignonne recipe, just as it appears in Mastering the Art of French Cooking.

August 14th is National Creamsicle Day. Admit it, no matter how old you are, Creamsicles bring you back to the good ol’ days of your childhood when life was worry-free and full of laughter. You would stand on the sidewalk with your pals in the sweltering heat, just waiting for the ice cream truck to come. You’d get that big grin on your face when the ice cream man handed you your Creamsicle, and all you felt was pure joy when you bit into it. Don’t you miss those days? I sure do.
Well, I can’t give you back your childhood, but I can give you a fantastic homemade Creamsicle recipe. And trust me, when you taste this recipe, you’ll never miss the pre-packaged, boxed versions ever again!

If you’re like me, then you’re probably feeling pretty miserable right now because of this exhausting heat. I absolutely cannot stand it. I have no pool in my backyard, so no cooling off for me. I’ve been tempted to sneak into my neighbors’ pool in the middle of the night, while they’re sleeping…but I won’t. So, the only thing I’ve found that can take my mind off this heat, is a nice margarita. Mmm…sounds nice doesn’t it? I’ve come across a couple of margarita recipes that are sure to cool you off, and please your taste buds! I have personally made these recipes, and they really are wonderful. They’re great for summer parties with friends and family, cookouts, or just to make because they sound good.

I don’t know about you, but I am loving all of the new Cuisipro products we’re now carrying! All of their products are really cool. I personally, have already bought at least 6 Cuisipro products already. Some of the things I bought are the round cookie cutter set (I won’t be using them for cookies, though. I’ll use them to cut out circles when I use fondant); the cool little ice cream scoop that dispenses the ice cream in a cylinder shape so it fits right into an ice cream cone; the cupcake corer and decorating set; oh and the best one yet…the ICING PEN!!! This quite possibly could be the coolest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. Well maybe not, but it’s really awesome! I cannot wait to use it. I’m so excited about it, I feel the same way a 10 year old must feel at a Jonas Brothers Concert.
When all of the things I ordered get delivered to me, I’m going to go home and use them for baking and decorating until I fall asleep and my face falls into the cake. If I’m not at work the day after I get my stuff, don’t worry, I’ll just be at home using it all! Oh wait….I mean….I have the flu. **cough, cough**.

I had a thought last night. I wanted to make a cake that somehow represents KaTom. My wonderful place of employment. So I said to myself, “Self? How am I going to do this?”. My first idea was to do a flat cake with the company and logo. Then I thought that might not be creative enough. So now, I’m stuck. Should I do a flat cake, or maybe a round 3-tiered cake with KaTom Restaurant Supply written on each tier? I have the cake decorating version of writers block. Cake decorators block? Well, let’s just say I’m lacking creativity at this point. Who knows, a really great idea might come to me as I’m making the cake. That’s how I usually work.
