Commercial coffee grinders are highly important to the production of fresh, great tasting coffee. Grinding your own coffee allows for the freshest possible coffee and gives you the ability to consistently grind the coffee at a certain level of coarseness to provide the perfect cup of coffee each time. The coarseness of the grind ranges greatly depending on your personal choice. Coffee grinds vary from very course, which is similar to the texture of raw sugar, to medium, which is comparable to table salt, down to fine grinds, which are nearly powder, with a small hint of grittiness. The coarseness of the grind determines the amount of time it takes water to pass through the grinds, affecting both the flavor and aroma of your coffee. All of the commercial grinders offered through KaTom are manufactured by our premier manufacturers Bunn-O-Matic and Rancillo.
Types of Coffee Grinders
The vast array of available coffee grinders can be broken down into two specific categories to make the purchasing decision a little easier. Bulk coffee grinders and portion control grinders are the two basic types of coffee grinders available.
Bulk coffee grinders grind the beans directly into a bag, which is ideal for use in specialty coffee stores, retail coffee shops, or grocery stores. These highly-efficient grinders have a patented rotor design that is allows for quick, cool cleaning after each use.
Portion control grinders grind the coffee directly into a funnel which is then sent into a filter where water can pass through and the brewing process can begin. Commercial portion control grinders can meet any brewing specification with the broadest range of grinds from course to very fine without having to stop and change the burrs.
Styles of Coffee Grinders
Commercial coffee grinders are available with either removable or stationary hoppers. Removable hoppers could also be referred to as multihoppers. Removable multihoppers allow you to offer a variety of coffee flavors to your customers without having to switch grinders. You can simply change the hopper to meet the order of your customers.
Stationary hoppers cannot be moved, which minimizes mess around the unit from moving the hopper. These stationary units allow for easy cleaning and maintenance.
Coffee Grinder Sizes
Coffee bean grinders can be purchased with hoppers ranging in capacity from 1-9lbs. Smaller operations should purchase a grinder that meets their needs without creating unnecessary waste, such as a grinder with hopper capacities of 1, 2, or 3 lbs. Larger, high volume operations should purchase a commercial grinder that is capable of producing the large quantities of coffee needed, such as grinders with hopper capacities of 6, dual 6, or 9 lbs.
Specialty Options for Coffee Grinders
Coffee grinders are available with two specialty options, low profile or french press. Low profile coffee grinders are designed with a smaller footprint to minimize countertop space usage. Low profile grinders are perfect for undercounter applications or any area that needs a small, yet efficient grinder.
French press coffee grinders are generally used for espresso making purposes. These grinders produce a fine, powdery ground that creates a smooth, fresh, aromatic cup of espresso each time.
Types of Coffee Grinder Controls
Commercial coffee grinders have varying methods of control, which allows you choice depending on your personal preferences and volume of customers. Units with switches, sensors, or switches and sensors are all available. Coffee grinders with switches are manually controlled units that are very versatile and can work with many different applications.
Grinders with sensor controls switch on and off automatically to keep the level of grounds in the dispenser at a constant level, which is ideal for demanding applications. Sensor controls allow you to worry less about the coffee grinder and spend more time on customer service.
Coffee grinders with sensors and switches combine the best of both worlds to create a highly-efficient, easy to use machine.
